Serious Sam 3:BFE Review + Giveaway

It’s been over a year since Serious Sam 3 launched on the PC and a few months since the launch on the Xbox 360. I pre-ordered this game right when it was available for a discount since I owned previous Serious Sam games (Thanks Croteam!) and  I never looked back.

Story

Simply put, Serious Sam 3 is a prequel to Serious Sam: The First Encounter. It follows Sam and his gang who are trying to find the teleporter (ancient tech) to stop Metal from destroying the Earth (and if you played past SS games you know how that turned out…). The story levels are huge just like the first 2 games and there are a lot of secrets and easter eggs to find. But Serious Sam is not all about the story, it’s about the coop action! Up to 16 players on the PC can play together (4 on Xbox 360) for coop madness. I guarantee you that you have never witnessed real coop if you haven’t played this game! I always go back and play Serious Sam 3 because of the amazing coop.

Gameplay

Serious Sam 3 has awesome gameplay and I’ll start with the weapons. In the start of the campaign the player will find a sledgehamer which can smash the heads of creatures called Gnaars. I prefer ripping their eye balls out as I think it’s more fun. My favorite weapon still has to be the cannon. Playing with infinite ammo and a cannon is the most fun I had playing any game since 2011. It’s been a trademark weapon of Sam since the first game and the cheesy remarks when picking up the weapon makes it all the more awesome.

Graphics

For the PC, Serious Sam 3 has many graphic options ranging from low to ultra. I tried it on low and it looks like a game from the year 1998. That’s ok since not everyone’s computer can run amazing graphics and I like how Croteam is catering to everyone’s needs. However, on ultra it’s one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever seen. The vivid colors and explosions on ultra will make you drool and did I mention how optimized it is? I played SS3 on high on my laptop while getting 45 frames per second and other PC games I can’t even get close to high since they are mostly ports from consoles. Also, they are many color options to choose from such as black and white, vivid (my favorite), cold, and more. On top of that, the player has the option to choose what kind of blood they want such as green, kiddy, and hippie. The customization options in SS3 proves that Croteam took their time and created a masterpiece of a game in all aspects.

Lasting Appeal

The lasting appeal of SS3 for me is basically until the day where noone is playing coop online which is very unlikely for the next few years. The coop always has me coming back for more. It’s still to this day a breath of fresh air to play from time to time with all these military shooters out there. Serious Sam 3:BFE now has steam workshop support so expect a wave of new content such as weapons, levels, and funny character models. Also, the survival mode which has 16 player capacity too is plenty of fun. Fight off a horde of enemies coming from every direction on a huge map. Croteam just recently updated the game and added more survival/multiplayer maps for guess how much? Yep, free! With continued patches, multiplayer and survival modes, and coop SS3 will always be played by me and should for gamers who like to have tons of fun! Oh, and it’s under $40. ($6 on steam sales)
